Sept-Step Rondo, for String Quartet (Senior Recital)

Note: Originally titled “Rondo”

Program Notes:

"Rondo" is a string quartet built on the lively ABACA form, one of the most common structures in Western music. Much like a precursor to the verse-chorus format in pop music, rondo form revolves around a recurring A theme, which returns between contrasting sections. This piece's driving energy comes from its 7/8 meter, which gives it an off kilter, propulsive feel. It plays with rhythmic expectations, leading the listener through unexpected twists while maintaining a constant momentum. As the music unfolds, the energetic A-theme resurfaces twice, anchoring the piece amidst shifting textures and dynamics.
